Behavior Management

In our classroom we use two separate behavior management plans. One is for the individual child and the second is for cooperative group work. Both systems are based on rewarding children for their positive behavior and demonstrating the high expectations of respect, cooperation, and good citizenship that is upheld in our classroom.
Color
Cards
Each individual child has their own name card with five color cards behind it: green, yellow, pink, purple, and blue. Each child begins the day on a green symbolizing that they are ready to go. If the child is not showing positive behavior and/or is not adhering to the classroom rules despite redirecting from the teacher, this child will flip their card from green to yellow symbolizing a need to slow down. If such behavior continues the yellow card is flipped to a pink which results in a time out from the activity. The child will be asked to rejoin the activity when he/she feels that he/she can exhibit the appropriate behavior. By changing the pink card to purple, the student will owe five minutes of recess time. At the end of the five minutes, the student and teacher will discuss why the behavior which caused the loss of recess time as well as other strategies to use in the situation. Finally, if the student is asked to change the purple card to blue, then parents are contacted to discuss the matter and achieve a positive outcome from the student. Each day the students will be rewarded with two stamps for a green card, one for a yellow, zero for a pink, purple or blue with a reward resulting every ten stamps.
Bean
Counters
In third grade, the students will be expected to work cooperatively in groups on a a daily basis. Each group will have a small container in which they will store the beans that they earn for showing positive behaviors and teamwork. Beans are only given to a group when the entire group is working together thus encouraging teamwork. At the end of the week, the group with the most beans will receive No Homework passes.
Be sure to ask your child each day what color they ended the day on and how many beans they earned that day!
