Introduction:

Did you know that chicks come from eggs?  Birds begin growing inside an egg with a hard shell.  A baby chick grows inside an egg for 21 days.  A baby chick hatches with downy like feathers, is able to see, and can walk, eat and drink by itself shortly after hatching.    

This web quest was created to show how chicks hatch.  You will have the opportunity to become familiar with the process of hatching chicks.  You will be answering questions, creating a calendar and a PowerPoint presentation using information you find on the internet.

You and your team of embryologists will search several websites to learn about the life cycle of a chick. At the end of this web quest you will be able to:

Label part of a chicken egg.

Find out about how a chick hatches

 Create a calendar that shows the different stages of embryonic development.

Understand and record the requirements for taking care of an egg in our classroom incubator.

Define embryology vocabulary

Create a Power Point presentation with your group that shows how an embryo develops into a chick.

 

The Process:

First, your team will investigate different websites and take notes for your PowerPoint presentation.  Print out your question page.  Follow the links to help you answer the questions.   

Second, Draw and label the parts of a fertilized egg.  Print out the diagram and label. Click on the baby chick to get to the website that will help you with your drawing. 

Third, Print out the calendar so that your team can record the development of the embryo. You will use this calendar to record the development of the embryo from the day the eggs are put into the incubator until the egg hatches.

Fourth, Using the information you and your group print out, you will create a countdown to chick calendar.  Draw the stages on development the paper provided.  Make sure you label the stages Click here for the stages!

Last, you and your group will create a power point presentation about hatching chickens from what you've learned on this Web Quest.  Your PowerPoint will show the life cycle of a chick.  Each slide must be designed carefully and with factual information.  All slides must include at least one picture related to what you write on the slide.
